Back To School, Back To Growth: What Pre-K4 Taught Me About Chasing Excellence in Voiceover
This week I dropped my son off for his very first day of Pre-K4. New school. New teacher. New backpack that's honestly bigger than he is.
I felt everything. Nervous for him. A little nostalgic (where did the time go, seriously). But mostly? Pride. Watching him walk through those doors with his chin up and his backpack bouncing, practically vibrating with excitement to learn something brand new... that's the kind of joy that sneaks up on you and knocks the wind out in the best way.
And somewhere between the parking lot and my second cup of coffee, it hit me: my son just modeled the exact mindset that separates the voice actors (and honestly, the professionals in ANY field) who keep growing from the ones who plateau.
There's No Such Thing As "Made It"
Here's the thing nobody tells you about this industry. There is no finish line. Not really. The most successful people I know in voiceover, the ones booking the campaigns, narrating the audiobooks, voicing the characters you grew up with, they are still taking classes. Still getting notes. Still raising their hand and saying "I don't know that one yet, but I'm going to learn it."
The second you decide you've arrived is the second you stop moving. And in a craft like ours, standing still looks a lot like going backward.
Chase Perfection, Catch Excellence
There's a quote often credited to football coach Vince Lombardi that I keep coming back to: "Perfection is not attainable. But if we chase perfection, we can catch excellence."
I love that. Not because it lets us off the hook for doing great work... but because it reframes the whole chase. You're never going to nail every read, land every callback, or master every genre. Nobody does. But the CHASING? That's where the excellence lives.
Pick One Lane. Watch It Lift Everything.
Here's what I've learned after 25 years of chasing it myself: growth in one lane lifts every other lane you're in. Sharpen your character work and your commercial reads get more alive. Study animation timing and your audiobook narration gets more textured. It really is true, a rising tide lifts all boats. Pick ONE skill to focus on right now. Get curious about it. Get a little uncomfortable with it. Watch how it strengthens everything else you do.
That starts with being honest with yourself. What are you already strong at? Where do you want to grow? What's the one skill that, if you leveled it up this year, would change the way you show up in every session? You don't need to have all the answers today. You just need to keep asking the question.
I didn't start out doing everything I do now. Not the puppetry, not the ADR directing, not the coaching. Twenty five years ago I was just a guy chasing his first booking. Every genre I've picked up since has been its own new first day of school... nervous, exciting, and absolutely worth walking through the door for.
